Grâce à son journal intime, nous apprenons que K., la personnage principale du film, rentre de la Russie post-révolutionnaire dans sa terre natale de la Grande Syrie. Là, après l’effondrement de l’Empire Ottoman, des communautés individuelles tentent de trouver leur autonomie. Le film juxtapose le passé russe, présenté par des plans de films soviétiques classiques comme Espagne de Esfir Shub et Kinoglaz de Dziga Vertov, avec la Syrie contemporaine, représentée par des images prises par des téléphones cellulaires. Ce faisant, le réalisateur crée un parallèle entre deux réalités incompatibles et assemble un essai multimédia sur le néocolonialisme et l’indépendance.
“Après l’écrasement de notre révolution en Egypte en 2013, Mapping Lessons (Leçons de cartographie) s’est esquissé comme un rêve éveillé. Ce film est le produit d’une conversation visuelle entre différentes luttes politiques à travers l’espace et le temps, depuis les guerres anticoloniales contre les Français et les Anglais dans les années 1920 jusqu’à la révolution syrienne de 2011 en passant par l’Espagne de 1936, l’introduction d’un souvenir révisionniste des Soviets russes, et la commune de Paris entre autres. Ce film est ma façon de mettre à jour les liens entre notre condition néocoloniale actuelle et le passé, tout en gardant un œil sur ce qu’on peut changer la prochaine fois.” P. Rizk.

Through the diary entries of the film’s main protagonist K., we learn about her return from post-revolutionary Russia to her home in Greater Syria, in which, after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, individual communities are trying to find a way to autonomy. Thanks to the juxtaposition with the Russian past, presented through shots from Soviet film classics such as Esfir Shub’s Spain or Kinoglaz by Dziga Vertov, and the Syrian present, portrayed through various mobile phone footage, the director draws parallels between two incompatible realities and creates a multimedia essay on neo-colonialism and independence.
“After the crushing of our revolution in Egypt in 2013, Mapping Lessons began as a daydream. This film is a visual conversation between political struggles across time and space, from anti-colonial battles against the French and British in the 1920s, to the Syrian revolution in 2011, 1936 Spain, a revisionist memory of Russian Soviets, and the Paris Commune amongst others. This film was my way of relating our current neocolonial condition with the past, all with an eye on what to do the next time.” P. Rizk
